@===> Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?

2010-09-03 / TextBooks / No Comment

Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? Overview

“The only way to get what you’re worth is to stand out, to exert emotional labor, to be seen as indispensable, and to produce interactions that organizations and people care deeply about.”

In bestsellers such as Purple Cow and Tribes, Seth Godin taught readers how to make remarkable products and spread powerful ideas. But this book is different. It’s about you – your choices, your future, and your potential to make a huge difference in whatever field you choose.

There used to be two teams in every workplace: management and labor. Now there’s a third team, the linchpins. These people invent, lead (regardless of title), connect others, make things happen, and create order out of chaos. They figure out what to do when there’s no rule book. They delight and challenge their customers and peers. They love their work, pour their best selves into it, and turn each day into a kind of art.

Linchpins are the essential building blocks of great organizations. Like the small piece of hardware that keeps a wheel from falling off its axle, they may not be famous but they’re indispensable. And in today’s world, they get the best jobs and the most freedom.

Have you ever found a shortcut that others missed? Seen a new way to resolve a conflict? Made a connection with someone others couldn’t reach? Even once? Then you have what it takes to become indispensable, by overcoming the resistance that holds people back. Linchpin will show you how to join the likes of…

*Keith Johnson, who scours flea markets across the country to fill Anthropologie stores with unique pieces.
*Marissa Mayer, who keeps Google focused on the things that really matter.
*Jason Zimdars, a graphic designer who got his dream job at 37signals without a résumé.
*David, who works at Dean and Deluca coffeeshop in New York. He sees every customer interaction as a chance to give a gift and is cherished in return.

As Godin writes, “Every day I meet people who have so much to give but have been bullied enough or frightened enough to hold it back. It’s time to stop complying with the system and draw your own map. You have brilliance in you, your contribution is essential, and the art you create is precious. Only you can do it, and you must.”

Seth Godin es probablemente uno de los autores más longevos y prolíficos en el área del marketing, las empresas y los negocios.

Desde hace más de una década, Godin ha estado sacando un hit tras otro: “Tribes”, “Purple cow”, “Small is the new big” o “All the marketers are liars”.

PEACE OUT

I am taking an online Microbiology course that employs the textbook that this study guide supplements. Our professor is incredibly unhelpful when it comes to helping us decipher what material in the book is most important, and simply recommends that we should be extremely familiar with all of the material in the text. Before I bought this study guide, studying for my tests was like drinking from a fire hose: You are able to get a little bit of it in your mouth, but the majority of it just blows right by you because there is just too to much take to in at once. This study guide as saved my grade in this class. It has helped me to sort out the material in the text, and presents the information in a way that can be understood. Also, the set-up of the study guide also helps in the areas where rote memorization is necessary. I would recommend this study guide to absolutely everyone.

@===> Contracts: Transactions and Litigation (American Casebook)

2010-08-30 / TextBooks / No Comment

Contracts: Transactions and Litigation (American Casebook) Overview

This text is a blend of classic common law contract cases with modern, 21st-century opinions and draws heavilly upon the problem method of instruction. The book compares and contrasts the common law of contracts, the Restatement (Second) of Contracts, and Uniform Commercial Code article 2 rules, as well as those of the Convention on the International Sale of Goods and the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts, and explores their evolution and application. The authors’ approach is to emphasize the importance of context to the application of legal principles and the connenctions and overlap between the knowledge and skills needed to be a litigator and those needed by a transactional attorney.

Excellent shape, better than advertised. Absolutely no internal writing, bent pages, busted spine. Shipping time was fine, and price was excellent, considering this is a book that goes for 0 brand new (which was basically the condition I received it in) at your local Law School book store.

Material: well… It’s a text book about contracts. Nothing too exciting in here.

@===> Administrative Procedure and Practice, Problems and Cases, 4th (American Casebook)

2010-08-12 / TextBooks / No Comment

Administrative Procedure and Practice, Problems and Cases, 4th (American Casebook) Overview

This popular casebook, with its unique approach focusing on real problems and real administrative practice, is now out in a new edition. The latest Supreme Court cases and the hottest issues, like the ethical issues involved in the torture memos, have been added. The new edition, however, retains its distinctive characteristics of using problems as the primary pedagogical tool, including problems that do not involve courts; raising the ethical issues peculiar to government lawyers; and orienting the course around administrative law practice, rather than theory. While theory is not ignored, it arises out of the crucible of reality-based problems, providing a basis for students to appreciate the theory.

@===> Graphic Design, Referenced: A Visual Guide to the Language, Applications, and History of Graphic Design

2010-08-11 / TextBooks / No Comment

Graphic Design, Referenced: A Visual Guide to the Language, Applications, and History of Graphic Design Overview

“Graphic Design, Referenced” is a visual and informational guide to the most commonly referenced terms, historical moments, landmark projects, and influential practitioners in the field of graphic design. With more than 2,000 design projects illustrating more than 400 entries, it provides an intense overview of the varied elements that make up the graphic design profession through a unique set of chapters: principles – defines the very basic foundation of what constitutes graphic design to establish the language, terms, and concepts that govern what we do and how we do it, covering layout, typography, and printing terms; knowledge – explores the most influential sources through which we learn about graphic design from the educational institutions we attend to the magazines and books we read; representatives – gathers the designers who over the years have proven the most prominent or have steered the course of graphic design in one way or another; and, practice – highlights some of the most iconic work produced that not only serve as examples of best practices, but also illustrate its potential lasting legacy. “Graphic Design, Referenced” serves as a comprehensive source of information and inspiration by documenting and chronicling the scope of contemporary graphic design, stemming from the middle of the twentieth century to today.

The two authors of this amazing book wisely say in the intro that their endeavors are not really comparable to the Meggs, Hollis, Bringhurst or even newcomer Stephen Eskilson’s standard history of graphics, design and typography. They have approached the subject in a fresh and I thought unique way.

The book is in four sections: Principles (design, type and print); Knowledge (books, online, collections and colleges); Representatives (designers, type creators, design writers and design clubs) and Practice (139 pages bulging with practical examples of anything designed. What I thought interesting was the way these four sections are developed to cover a phenomenal amount of information, either historical or contemporary, and presented primarily as visual items backed up with bite-size text.

Obviously the more technical aspects of design can only be covered briefly: print is wrapped up in twelve pages (and nothing on paper) but the range of design, from magazines to motion graphics or typography: anatomy; genealogy; classification; typesetting is spread over fifty-eight pages. Brand identity covering logos and corporate programs gets twenty-five pages. Perhaps the weakest part of the book is ‘Recommended reading’, summed up with just a spread and not including the 1989 Typographic Communications Today by Ed Gottschalk or the 2001 The Art of Looking Sideways by Alan Fletcher and a book I’m sure would have been included had it been published before 2009, Bibliographic: 100 Classic Graphic Design Books.

All of this information, which includes 2500 images, is deftly served up in a clear, straightforward page and typographic design which fortunately avoids one of the annoyances of books for designers: acres of empty page space (I tend to think this is only an indication of too little material for too many pages). There is though a slight annoyance with the book. Whenever a cross reference appears in the text a miniscule arrow is used pointing to a page number both of which are in a light tint and therefore almost unreadable.

As the title’s sub-deck says ‘A visual guide to the language, application and history of graphic design’ and I thought it worked a treat. A real-page turner presenting creativity in a fresh format.

Where on earth can a person with a keen eye for excellent home décor find libraries with rolling ladders, living rooms covered in sumptuous chinoiserie fabric, monochromatic bedrooms with spiral staircases, and dining room walls lacquered in persimmon red paint, all gathered together in one immensely stylish book? The answer, of course, is Style and Substance: The Best of Elle Décor.

Style and Substance features hundreds of beautifully rendered photographs of the homes of designers, architects, antiques buyers, celebrities, and fashion executives. The contents is divided into public spaces and personal spaces, and further divided down by rooms. It is luxurious and makes no apologies for it, and whether a reader’s taste in interior design is clean and modern or cozy and careworn, there is something here to inspire everyone. For the former there is Will Kopelman’s home office on page 72, with its crisp white walls, glass-topped desk, and Bertoia wire chairs. For the latter, Julie Greenwood’s kitchen on pages 116 and 117 will make even the most anti-materialistic of souls covetous, and it’s no small wonder as to why: the antique French furniture and Italian chandelier are a sight to behold when contrasted with the exposed stone walls and floor.

The title is in no way misleading. This is truly the best of Elle Decor. This book is a marvel and a wonder, and should be considered a must read for anyone interested in interior design.
